Day of Surgery - Lumpectomy

Wednesday, August 27th, my surgery call time was 9:30 am.  Prior to the surgery I took care of a couple of things.  For one I updated my Trust and all beneficiaries on my accounts.  I also established my medical directive.  I didn’t anticipate that anything could go wrong but I wanted to leave everything in order just in case.  When my dad passed away, I had to deal with probate because his affairs were not in order and I did not want to do that to my kids.  No one likes to think of the worst, I am no exception, but I want my family to know exactly what my wishes are.

My last day of work was on August 26th, and I left everything in order at work.  On August 27th, I checked in to the hospital at 9:30 am.  God has blessed me with a strong support system…my two BFF’s were there, my aunt, my mom, my sister and my cousin, plus there were other people on standby via text like my kids, brother, aunts and other cousins.  I was so grateful that they took time out of their day to be with me in the morning.  Unfortunately, they couldn’t all stay so my mom and sister stayed with me.

They prepped me for surgery and I went back to the OR at about noonish.  The surgery didn’t take too long and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room.  They told me the surgery went well and I didn’t feel any pain.  They had removed the lump with clear margins and also took 9 lymph nodes from my left armpit.  I went home and rested the rest of the day.

I was off work for a little over two weeks.  I took that time to rest and recover from the surgery.  Thank God there were no complications and I healed very well.  The part that was annoying for me was not being able to take a good shower since I couldn’t wet the wound and that I had to stay home.  I am usually a busy body and for me to sit and do nothing was a little challenging.  Next on the list was to wait for the pathology report regarding the specimens.
